Tolu Minerals has put drilling results and a restart of the Tolukuma gold operation in Papua New Guinea at the centre of its investment case. Tolukuma is a historic high-grade underground mine that has changed hands and stopped and started more than once.
The attraction of a brownfield restart is straightforward: existing workings, existing access, existing knowledge of the orebody, and a shorter path to cash flow than any greenfield equivalent.
The drilling programme is the part that determines whether this is a restart with a future or a restart with a tail. Extending high-grade structures at depth is what turns a short campaign into a mine.
